Our Pastor

Nurbert Hughes has been a lifelong Methodist and disciple of our Lord and Savior, Jesus the Christ. God got hold of him as a young lad and has been his guide throughout his entire life. As such, wherever he was stationed or lived, he served in many different leadership capacities, including Lay Leader, within the local church.

He is currently serving at Clinton United Methodist Church (in Clinton, Maryland) as a Certified Lay Minister (CLM). As a CLM, he is responsible for coordinating "age level" ministries, which mainly involves working to ensure the church's ministries reflect the needs of children and young people (i.e., pre-school, children in elementary school, youth, and young adults). He directly served as the coordinator for youth ministry, taught the youth Bible studies and confirmation classes; oversaw the yearly Easter and Fall Fest activities; assisted with the yearly Vacation Bible School; and oversaw the youth participation for the worship services on Youth Sundays, the Easter Sonrise Service, and the Family Christmas Eve Service. He also developed and served as advisor and mentor to the young adults group.

Other leadership roles include preaching, serving as worship leader; serving as a Class Leader; assisting with pastoral care, visiting members who are housebound, in hospitals, and in nursing care facilities; singing with the Men's, Gospel, Praise Team, and Chancel choirs; leading services at the Pine View Nursing Home in support of the Evangelism Ministry; and serving as president of the United Methodist Men.

Nurbert Hughes is originally from the island of Tortola in the British Virgin Islands. During his early childhood, however, his family relocated to St. Thomas in the United States Virgin Islands, where he remained until joining the military in 1980.

He obtained a Bachelor of Arts in Mathematics from the College (now University) of the Virgin Islands and a Masters of information Technology from the University of Maryland University College (now the University of Maryland Global Campus). Professionally, he served in the military (the U.S. Air Force) for 25 years as a communications officer. Hence, he has served in numerous leadership positions. His highlight assignment was becoming a Squadron Commander. He retired as a Lieutenant Colonel. Since leaving the military, he has worked on various contracts as a Cybersecurity Analyst.

Nurbert has been married to his wonderful wife, Carol Hughes, for 40 years. They have two sons, one granddaughter, and are anticipating the arrival of a second grandchild in July.

He feels that God has been calling him to be a pastor for a long time. He has received a strong message from the Lord that it's time to let go and let God. Hence, he has moved to the affirmative and is earnestly saying yes to God's call.
